(Updated: Nov 2009)

Lustre™ 2.0 will be built on a new architectural code base, which is different than the one used with Lustre 1.6 and 1.8 releases. New 2.0 users will not be affected by these architectural changes when they install their Lustre system. Initially, existing Lustre users will need to follow a slightly different procedure to upgrade to 2.0.

Installing Lustre 2.0

For new users, installing Lustre 2.0 will be as simple as downloading the Lustre packages from the Sun download site, installing them and creating a new file system. Users will not need to follow any special installation steps.

Upgrading Lustre 1.8 to 2.0 With a Service Interruption

Existing Lustre users will be able to upgrade from 1.8.2 to Lustre 2.0, but initially, it will require that Lustre clients be unmounted from the file system during the upgrade. Once the servers are upgraded and restarted, then the clients can be remounted. After the 2.0 upgrade, Lustre 1.8 clients can interoperate with the new servers.

Upgrading Lustre 1.8 to 2.0 Without a Service Interruption

When live upgrade capability is added to Lustre 2.0 (anticipated in the second half of 2010), existing Lustre users will be able to upgrade from 1.8 to 2.0 while the Lustre file system is running. It will not be necessary to unmount and then remount Lustre clients when the servers are upgraded. After the 2.0 upgrade, Lustre 1.8 clients can interoperate with the new servers.
